Anna Butterss is not slowing down. The bassist just dropped "Ninths" last week, and now she's back with a new trio and a debut album on the way. It's called Beginningless, and it arrives today alongside the title track.
The lineup is a killer. Butterss teams with jazz trumpeter John Raymond and drummer/producer Ben Lumsdaine, three players who know how to lock in and float at the same time. Anyone who caught the loose, roaming feel of her 2022 solo record Activities knows how she moves: melodic, patient, always searching for the pocket.
"Beginningless" the track sets the tone. Raymond's trumpet drifts, Lumsdaine's drums breathe, and Butterss anchors it all with that warm low end she's built a name on. It's spacious and unhurried, a gem for late nights.
Butterss has spent years as a first call session player, but moments like this show her as a bandleader. Three musicians, one shared language. This one's a sleeper you'll want to sit with.
