Anna Meredith is back, and she's announcing a new album called Darling. It's been too long since we caught up with the Scottish composer, the one who turned 2016's Varmints into a maximalist art-pop stunner and kept pushing weirder on 2019's FIBS. The new track "Dusky" is the first taste.
Since then she's been everywhere, just not on a proper record. There was Bumps Per Minute, that bonkers dodgems sound installation. There was Nuc with the Ligeti Quartet. She scored The End We Start From and Thursday, and most recently Wicker, the Sundance fantasy comedy with Olivia Colman and Alexander Skarsgård, out Oct. 23 stateside.
So the woman stays busy. But Darling marks her return to the kind of genre-smashing solo work that made "Nautilus" an absolute belter years back, brass and synths colliding like nothing else out there.
"Dusky" is the opening move. If it's any sign, this album could be a real moment.
