Gabriel Kahane is back, and he's not slowing down. This year already gave us Elevator Songs, that theatrical high-concept stunner he built with Roomful Of Teeth, and now the Portland composer is announcing a second collaborative LP for 2024.
This time he's teamed with Finnish violinist Pekka Kuusisto under the band name Council. The debut record, This Day, Every Day, arrives with two tracks to preview, and if you've followed Kahane since The Ambassador or his aching 2014 commuter opus The Fiction Issue, you know the man builds albums like architecture. Every detail matters.
Kuusisto is a perfect foil here. The partnership leans into strings, voice, and the kind of restless craft Kahane has chased his whole career. Two ambitious collaborations in a single year is a flex few artists attempt.
The first two cuts are live now, and they hint at something tender and precise. Kahane keeps finding new rooms to work in. This one might be his best yet.
