Tim Kasher is a director now. The longtime Cursive frontman, cut from the same Saddle Creek cloth as Conor Oberst, made his directorial debut a couple years back with an indie found-footage horror feature called Who's Watching. A movie about a creepy, obsessive stalker? That tracks with a guy who spent a whole album dissecting a marriage on 2000's Domestica, then turned his own life into art on The Ugly Organ.

Kasher scored the film himself, and a soundtrack album lands next month. Today, Cursive drop "Wounded Animal," the new track they recorded for the movie. It's a gem: taut, nervy, all the tension you'd want from a band that has been mining dread and self-doubt since Such Blinding Stars For Starving Eyes back in 1997.

The horror-scoring pivot feels right for a songwriter this obsessed with obsession. New music, a new medium, same restless brain at the center.

Kasher keeps finding fresh corners to haunt. That's the whole appeal.
