Katrina Ford is back with a new solo record, and it's called To The Lighthouse. First taste: "Winter Sun."
If the name rings a bell, it should. Ford has been circling the indie world for over two decades, most famously as the voice you heard drifting through TV On The Radio's Return To Cookie Mountain, which just turned 20 this year. Her backing vocals were the secret weapon on so many of those tracks.
But go back further. Ford fronted Baltimore art-punk crew Love Life, whose 2002 album Here Is Night, Brothers, Here The Birds Burn was Dave Sitek's first-ever production gig, before he ever touched the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Fever To Tell. That's a serious lineage.
"Winter Sun" carries all of that history: atmospheric, patient, built around a voice that has always known how to haunt a room. It's a stunner.
Ford has spent years lifting other people's songs. Now she's front and center, and it feels overdue.
