Secrecy are announcing their debut EP, and the name alone tells you everything. It nods to the Germs' "What We Do Is Secret," that whole hidden underground where outsiders get the side-eye. Fitting. The London crew just shared "Knife In My Dreams," and it's a ripper.
Here's the moment: Winter In A&E is the title, and lead track "Knife In My Dreams" shows off a big, propulsive sound. Coarse hardcore vocals. Reverb-drenched guitar jangle. Drums that boom like the whole room is caving in.
What gets me is the frenetic darkness, the kind that recalls when goth first crawled out of punk's wreckage. But listen closer and there's a Stone Roses glimmer running underneath it all, that shimmer that keeps things from going pitch black.
This is a band working the exact seam where dread meets melody, and they know it. Secrecy feel built for dark rooms and louder stereos. One track in, and the mystery is doing its job. Keep your eyes on these ones.
