SML’s Josh Johnson Readies New Album Animative

He's back, and he's brought serious company. The composer and multi-instrumentalist lands his International Anthem/Nonesuch debut with two heavy collaborators in tow: Meshell Ndegeocello and Macie Stewart, both fixtures who know how to bend a room.

This feels like a moment. The pairing with International Anthem, the Chicago label that keeps unearthing gems, makes total sense for where his sound sits now: patient, textured, built for deep listening. Ndegeocello brings that low-end pulse she's carried since the '90s, and Stewart adds the strings and voice that made her Finna Be Present work such a quiet stunner.

Think back to his earlier records, all those long-form pieces that reward patience. This one looks set to push further. Two labels, three players, and a canvas wide enough to fill.

The reach here is real: acoustic weight, electronic drift, jazz bones under the whole thing. Collaboration as craft, not gimmick.

A debut that already sounds like an anthem. Circle the date.
