Sponge are calling it. The Detroit alt-rock vets just announced their final album, Recuerda Tu Muerte, and the lead track "Self Inflicted Loss" is out now to mark the moment.
If you were near a radio in the mid-90s, you know these guys. Rotting Piñata went gold in 1994, and "Plowed" and "Molly (Sixteen Candles Down the Drain)" were everywhere. They never hit those heights again, but they never vanished either. They kept grinding, kept releasing records, kept touring. Last year they dropped 1994, a covers set built entirely from tracks that shared their debut's birth year. A neat full-circle move.
Now comes the actual goodbye. Recuerda Tu Muerte lands as a proper closer to a run that spanned three decades, and "Self Inflicted Loss" carries that grizzled, hook-heavy crunch they built their name on. Longtime frontman Vinnie Dombroski still sounds hungry.
Thirty years from that piñata to this. Not many bands get to end on their own terms. Sponge are.
