Grant Chapman is back, and the timing feels right. The NYC musician, who you might know as the percussionist propelling Chris Taylor's Body Meat, dropped the self-titled Torture Methods debut in May. That record was a stunner: a gothic, glitch-ridden nightmare, but one of the fun ones, the kind that plays out in your head like a surrealist arthouse film. All texture and menace and strange beauty.
Now Chapman returns with "RIPPER, REAPER," out Friday, Sept. 18. It's another sample-warped gem from a project that keeps proving how deep his ear runs beyond the drum kit.
If you caught the sprawl of that first Torture Methods release, you already know the terrain here: fractured samples, creeping dread, moments that shift under your feet. This new track builds on that momentum without losing the strangeness that made the debut click.
Chapman keeps finding new ways to unsettle you and make it feel like a gift. Press play on this one.
