Angine de Poitrine just made their U.S. television debut. The polka-dotted Canadian math-punk duo turned up on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon Monday night, and they came with a brand new track called "Zugzegk." Fallon fumbled the title. Guitarist-bassist Khn and drummer Klek did not fumble a single note.
This is a band that thrives on chaos and precision at once. They dropped Vol. II back in April, their self-described "Mantra-Rock Dada Pythagorean-Cubist Orchestra" reaching full bloom, and anyone who caught their Jools Holland set in June already knew the microtonal racket was built for live rooms. "Zugzegk" is a five-minute ripper, all jagged edges and polyrhythmic muscle.
The momentum is real. They played Newport Jazz Festival this summer, then brought a two-night run to New York's Le Poisson Rouge. That is a wild spread of rooms for one duo.
