Weezer are back on the road. The band just dropped the Gold Album, cut with producers Kenneth Blume and Klas Åhlund, and every Rivers Cuomo record lately doubles as a launchpad for another big run. This one's called the Gathering tour. For the next month and a half they'll play arenas across America with the Shins and Silversun Pickups opening, then haul a European version over next year with Taking Back Sunday in tow.
Here's the real gem: the kickoff. Tuesday night at Sacramento's Golden 1 Center, Weezer dug deep and broke out a stack of live rarities they hadn't touched in ages. That's the good stuff. Deep cuts from the Pinkerton and Green Album days always hit different in a room full of diehards, and this set leaned into that history hard.
Weezer have been doing this since 1994, and they still know how to surprise a crowd. If the opener is any sign, the Gathering is going to be a killer.
