DownTown Mystic – Maybe Love's A Crime
DownTown Mystic's 'Maybe Love's A Crime' is a gorgeous slice of heartland rock from Toms River, vintage guitar tones and classic storytelling done right
There's a question in the title and the track spends its runtime chewing on it. 'Maybe Love's A Crime' opens with clean, ringing guitar and a vocal that sounds lived in. The arrangement is spacious, letting the lyric do the the work while the rhythm section locks into a groove that wouldn't sound out of place on a late-seventies FM dial. That's my fave part of the song, closely followed by the hook, which lands like a dream. Excellent classic rock songwriting, honest and road-worn.
DownTown Mystic is the alter ego of Robert Allen, back with us again after 'Hard Enough (On E Street Remix)' in February. He's joined by serious company: Steve Holley on drums, Paul Page on bass, and Max Weinberg and Garry Tallent of the E Street Band. The single lands October 9. With music placed on over 250 TV shows and films, he's one of the most sync-licensed rock artists going. A real gem.
