Nia Marie – when the summer ends
Nia Marie's 'when the summer ends' is a gorgeous slice of alternative R&B from Queens, dreamy, soulful, and perfectly attuned to the ache of a season slipping away
Nia Marie knows exactly how to bottle a feeling. 'when the summer ends' opens soft and unhurried, her vocal floating over warm keys and a gentle pulse that sounds like late August in the city. The production, crafted with Juan Arango in his Queens home studio, is really great, all close, intimate but beautifully clear. There's real longing here, the lyric tracing the edges of a relationship that might not survive the shift in weather. And that vocal? It carries everything. Lovely alt-R&B, warm and wistful and exactly right.
Nia Marie is a Philadelphia-born, Queens-based singer-songwriter who's been making music since she was six. Classical violin and piano training turned to songwriting at thirteen, drawing on Jill Scott, Alicia Keys, and Stevie Wonder. A Berklee graduate, she released her debut EP 'Because You Said I Love You'. She was with us back in June with 'Selfish', and this new single confirms she's one to watch. A real, real beauty.
