This week’s rock looks inward and wears its heart on its sleeve. Reflective, melodic songwriting shaped by real life, working-class grit and hard-won calm meeting warm, timeless craft. No posturing, no polish for its own sake, just honest songs told straight. Turn it up.

Teanko – Between Two Selves

Reflective, warm and forward-looking, “Between Two Selves” is a delicious piece of melodic soft rock from Teanko about the space between who you were and who you are.

Here’s a song about arriving at your own life. “Between Two Selves” was born from a period of real change, and it sits in the space between who you have been and who you are now. Delving into letting go of old expectations without erasing the past. Photographs, memories and even the doubts all feed into it, yet for all its looking back, its direction is quietly forward. It’s captured in that lovely line, “but this is where I’m exactly meant to be.” Set to warm soft rock with just enough 80s glow to give me all the feels, it’s the sound of hard-won calm. Reflective, tender and a real beauty.

Teanko is the recording project of Dutch singer-songwriter Theo Konst, now based in Portugal, who pairs decades of writing, recording and performing with modern production techniques. His melodic blend of pop, rock and indie leans on strong songs, authentic emotion and timeless storytelling. And with choruses like this one, we’re definitely along for the ride. There’s a settled confidence to his writing here, the sound of an artist with a lot to say. A warm, seasoned voice, and one we’d welcome hearing much more from.

Novo Grey – My Life Is You

No polish, no cookie-cutter lines, just real feeling delivered straight: “My Life Is You” is a superb, working-class love song from Novo Grey.

Straight from the heart and proud of it. “My Life Is You” blends British melancholy with a touch of Americana soul, and Novo Grey delivers it with zero pretence, no polished pop sheen, no cookie-cutter lines, just honest feeling and a plainspoken melody. It moves between melancholic and romantic without loosening its grip, trusting the song itself to carry the weight rather than any studio trickery. There’s warmth and a little grit in equal measure, and it lands all the harder for its sincerity. Heartfelt, unfussy and quietly affecting. A lovely single.

Novo Grey is a Switzerland-based singer-songwriter who writes, in his own words, to hold stillness in a noisy world. Proudly working class, he takes “Working-Class Hero” as his motto and names John Lennon as his great role model, while insisting he’s no mere imitator. His sound blends British melancholy with Americana soul, shaped by the Beatles, Oasis, Bruce Springsteen and early Coldplay, and his writing springs straight from real life: sometimes melancholic, sometimes combative, never afraid to sting. An honest, grounded voice. One to keep close.
